PureWrite
Last updated: August 19, 2026
The short version: PureWrite does not collect any data. It has no accounts, no analytics and no tracking. It works on a folder of Markdown files you already own, reads and writes them in place, and cannot reach anything outside that folder. The App Store versions make no network connections at all; the version downloaded from our site connects only to check for its own updates.
1. Data collection
We do not collect, transmit, or store any personal information. PureWrite has no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no crash reporting, and no advertising. We operate no servers in connection with this app, so there is nothing for us to receive.
2. Your files
Your documents stay on your device. PureWrite works on a folder of Markdown files that you choose. It reads and writes those files where they already live — nothing is imported, copied into the app, or converted into another format.
The app can only reach the folder you picked. Every filesystem operation in the app's own core checks the path against that folder's root before it runs, so nothing outside it is readable or writable, even by the app's own interface.
PureWrite reads each file's modification and creation time — to sort the file list, and to notice that a file changed on disk under it (because another editor or a sync client rewrote it) so it can reload instead of overwriting someone else's work. Nothing derived from those timestamps leaves your device.
3. Files stored in iCloud Drive
If the folder you choose is inside iCloud Drive, your files are synced by Apple's iCloud, under your own Apple Account — that is a service you already use, and this app is not part of it. PureWrite has no iCloud container of its own, uses no CloudKit, and sends nothing to us.
On iPhone and iPad, a file that is stored in iCloud but not yet downloaded is shown in the list and downloaded only when you open it. Searching across the folder deliberately skips files that are not downloaded and tells you how many it skipped, rather than pulling a whole folder down over your connection without asking.
4. Data stored on your device
PureWrite stores your settings — font size, text direction, sort order, which toolbar buttons are shown, interface language — and the location of the last folder you opened, so it reopens on the next launch. This is a path and a set of preferences, not the content of your documents.
On macOS and iOS the app also stores a security-scoped bookmark for that folder. This is an Apple mechanism that lets an app regain permission to a folder you already granted it, without asking you to choose it again every launch. It is meaningful only to this app on this device.
To remove all of it, delete the app — uninstalling removes everything PureWrite has stored. Your Markdown files are not touched by uninstalling, because they were never inside the app.
5. Network connections
The App Store and Mac App Store versions make no network connections at all. They contain no HTTP client and no networking libraries, the interface's content-security policy blocks outbound requests, and the app works identically with the device in airplane mode.
The version downloaded directly from our site is identical except for one thing: it can update itself. To do that it periodically asks storage.bdtech.app whether a newer version exists, and downloads it if you accept. That request carries no identifier and nothing about you or your files — the app's version, your operating-system version, and your IP address are what any web request necessarily reveals. The first automatic check asks your permission, and you can turn automatic checks off in the update dialog. No other network connection exists in either version.
6. Purchases
PureWrite is free. There are no in-app purchases and no subscriptions, so no payment information is ever involved.
7. Third-party services
None. PureWrite bundles no analytics, advertising, attribution, or crash-reporting services. Its dependencies are the user-interface and text-editing components it is built from, all of which run locally on your device. The direct-download version additionally bundles Sparkle, the open-source updater described in section 5, which talks only to our own server.
8. Children
PureWrite is suitable for users of all ages. Because it collects no data at all, it collects no data from children.
9. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "last updated" date. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
