PureKanban
Last updated: August 20, 2026
The short version: PureKanban does not collect any data. It has no accounts, no analytics and no tracking. Your boards are ordinary Markdown files in a folder you choose, it reads and writes them in place, and it cannot reach anything outside that folder. The App Store versions make no network connections at all; the version downloaded from our site connects only to check for its own updates.
1. Data collection
We do not collect, transmit, or store any personal information. PureKanban has no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no crash reporting, and no advertising. We operate no servers in connection with this app, so there is nothing for us to receive.
2. Your boards and the people you name in them
Your workspace stays on your device. A board in PureKanban is a Markdown file inside a folder you pick. The app reads and writes those files where they already live — nothing is imported, uploaded, or converted into another format.
The app can only reach the folder you picked. Every filesystem operation in the app's own core checks the path against that folder's root before it runs, so nothing outside it is readable or writable, even by the app's own interface.
The names and handles you add to the people registry (_people.md) — used to assign tasks and to show workload — are written into that file, in your folder, like everything else. They are never sent anywhere.
PureKanban reads each file's modification time in order to notice that a board changed on disk under it (because another editor, another device, or a sync client rewrote it) so it can merge instead of overwriting someone else's work, and it checks free disk space before writing so a full disk cannot truncate a board. Nothing derived from either leaves your device.
3. What the app writes into your folder
Besides your boards, PureKanban keeps three kinds of file inside the workspace folder you chose:
.purekanban/index.db— a local database that caches what the dashboard and the search read, so a large workspace stays fast. It holds only what is already in your files, and deleting it is always safe; it is rebuilt on the next launch..purekanban/backups/— a.bakcopy of a board's previous content, written on each save.<board>.conflict.md— written only when a board was edited both in the app and outside it in a way that genuinely conflicts. Rather than pick a winner, the app keeps the other version beside yours for you to reconcile.
All three live in your folder, on your device, and are yours to delete.
4. Folders synced by iCloud Drive or another service
If the folder you choose is inside iCloud Drive, your files are synced by Apple's iCloud, under your own Apple Account — that is a service you already use, and this app is not part of it. The same is true of Dropbox, a git repository, or any other sync you set up yourself. PureKanban has no iCloud container of its own, uses no CloudKit, and sends nothing to us.
A board that is stored in iCloud but not yet downloaded to the device is requested from iCloud and read once it arrives; reads and writes are coordinated with the system so the sync client and the app do not overwrite each other.
5. Data stored on your device
PureKanban stores your settings — interface language, the current user, the "only my cards" filter, which sidebar items are expanded, your custom goal order — and the location of the last workspace and board you opened, so it reopens on the next launch. This is a path and a set of preferences, not the content of your boards.
On macOS and iOS the app also stores a security-scoped bookmark for that folder. This is an Apple mechanism that lets an app regain permission to a folder you already granted it, without asking you to choose it again every launch. It is meaningful only to this app on this device.
To remove all of it, delete the app — uninstalling removes everything PureKanban has stored about itself. Your workspace folder is not touched by uninstalling, because it was never inside the app.
6. Network connections
The App Store and Mac App Store versions make no network connections at all. They contain no HTTP client and no networking libraries, the interface's content-security policy blocks outbound requests, and the app works identically with the device in airplane mode.
The version downloaded directly from our site is identical except for one thing: it can update itself. To do that it periodically asks storage.bdtech.app whether a newer version exists, and downloads it if you accept. That request carries no identifier and nothing about you or your boards — the app's version, your operating-system version, and your IP address are what any web request necessarily reveals. The first automatic check asks your permission, and you can turn automatic checks off in the update dialog. No other network connection exists in either version.
7. Purchases
PureKanban is free. There are no in-app purchases and no subscriptions, so no payment information is ever involved.
8. Third-party services
None. PureKanban bundles no analytics, advertising, attribution, or crash-reporting services. Its dependencies are the interface and file-handling components it is built from, all of which run locally on your device. The direct-download version additionally bundles Sparkle, the open-source updater described in section 6, which talks only to our own server.
9. Children
PureKanban is suitable for users of all ages. Because it collects no data at all, it collects no data from children.
10. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "last updated" date. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
